Manchester City dropped their first points of the season after Fulham came from two goals behind to snatch a well deserved point at Craven Cottage.
Cottagers skipper Danny Murphy was the hero after his deflected effort with 15 minutes to go beat Joe Hart to cap a remarkable comeback and preserve Martin Jol’s unbeaten record against City, as a manager, which now stretches to seven games.
That feat looked unlikely after Sergio Aguero’s double had put the visitors two goals to the good and took his tally for the season up to eight.
But Bobby Zamora’s goal in the 55th minute gave the home side hope before Murphy stepped up to complete the turnaround and leave City frustrated after they missed a host of chances to kill off the game.
Fulham haven’t made the best start to the season and their gloom looked like it would continue after Aguero opened the scoring after 18 minutes.
The Argentinian has taken the Premier League by storm and the host’s defence were no match for him or David Silva with the Spaniard feeding his partner in crime who then made no mistake with his finish past Mark Schwarzer.
Australian Schwarzer was in for a busy first period and had to be at his best to tip Gael Clichy’s crisp strike over the bar. He then made a superb save to deny Edin Dzeko’s goal bound header and keep the score at 1-0.
It was all in vain though as Aguero popped up 12 seconds into the second half to double City’s advantage smashing the ball low into the bottom corner after Dzeko had nodded Clichy’s long directional ball into his path.
Fulham responded brilliantly with the goal seemingly breathing some life into their performance as they pegged City back with a goal out of nothing. Roberto Mancini will be unhappy with his sides defending as Zamora found the top corner with a sweet effort after he was afforded too much room on the edge of the area.
Hart then had to be alert to preserve his sides lead tipping Moussa Dembele’s effort round the post and saving smartly from a Clint Dempsey header as Fulham piled on the pressure.
It finally told with 15 minutes to go as Zamora laid the ball into Murphy with the midfielders effort from 25-yards taking a wicked deflection off Vincent Kompany and sailing agonisingly away from Hart who had absolutely no chance.
